Thimbleweed/ Tall Anemone

Anemone virginiana
A hairy 2-3' plant. The long-stalked root leaves are 3-parted, each part further divided into toothed lobes. The 1" flowers are on unusually long (4-12") stalks that bear paired or whorled, deeply cut leaves at about the midpoint. Petals are absent and the 5(4-9) petal-like sepals are greenish-white. The fruit is a thimble-like head about 1" long and the mature, beaked seeds are attached to dense white tufts. Blooms June-August on dry, open-wooded slopes.
