Aster, Purple-stemmed
 

Aster puniceus
This tall, branched 2-8' plant has a bristly, purple stem. The toothed, lance-shaped, clasping leaves are rough on the upper surfaces and smooth beneath. The 3/4-1 1/2" flowers have 20-40 purple rays (rarely white). The linear bracts are loose and spreading. Blooms August-November in moist fields, swamps, thickets.
