Aster patens
A rather rough, hairy-stemmed 1-3' plant with wide-spreading branches. The rough, smooth-edged, lance-shaped or oval leaf has a heart-shaped base that clasps the stem. The branch leaves are smaller and hairy. The large, usually solitary 1-2" flowers are at the ends of slender branches and have 20-30 purple rays. The bracts are rough and hairy and have spreading, pointy tips. Blooms August-October in dry, open woods, clearings, roadsides.
