Aster, Heart-leaved

Aster cordifolius
A smooth-stemmed, bushy 1-5' plant. The heart-shaped lower leaves are toothed and on long slender stalks. Upper stem leaves are smaller, oval or lance-shaped, smooth-edged and sessile. The stalked 1/2-3/4" flower has 10-20 blue or violet (occasionally white) rays and a yellow disc that turns red. The smooth, narrow bracts lie flat. Blooms September-November in open woods, clearings.
